Covent Garden stabbing leaves four men in hospital
Four men aged 34, 39, 42 and 52 were wounded on Endell Street in Covent Garden, one of central London’s busiest shopping and theatre districts, on Wednesday afternoon. Police initially reported three victims, but the Metropolitan Police later confirmed that four men had sustained stab wounds and were taken to a major trauma centre.
A 47-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon and assault and remained in custody. Officers recovered a pair of scissors at the scene and said the early evidence suggested the Covent Garden stabbing was related to mental health, although the full circumstances and any connection between the suspect and the victims had not been established.
Police say injuries are not life-threatening
Two of the four men were later discharged from hospital, while the injuries suffered by the other two were not considered life-threatening or life-changing. An air ambulance landed in nearby Trafalgar Square, but all four patients were ultimately transported to the trauma centre by road after receiving treatment at the scene.
Witnesses described a heavy emergency-service presence and a brief stand-off before officers detained the woman. One account placed the first attacks near the Shaftesbury Theatre, after which the suspect allegedly moved along Endell Street, while another witness said she appeared incoherent as police approached her. The incident occurred in the heart of the West End, close to shops, restaurants and popular tourist attractions.

Those cases involved different circumstances and should not be conflated with Wednesday’s incident, which police currently describe as isolated and mental health-related. Even so, the Covent Garden stabbing in broad daylight in a crowded part of central London is likely to renew public concern over knife and sharp-object violence in Britain.
