AUR demands right to nominate prime minister
The leader of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), George Simion, said his party is ready to enter government in Romania, but only under one key condition.
According to Simion, AUR will join a future governing coalition only if it receives the right to nominate its own candidate for prime minister.
The AUR leader stressed that the party is not interested in participating in government merely as a junior coalition partner.
Simion seeks “real power” in government
Simion said AUR wants the ability to lead the government and implement its own political program, arguing that only this would allow for what he described as “real change” in Romania.
The demand comes as negotiations continue over the formation of a new cabinet following the latest political crisis in Romania.
AUR’s position is expected to complicate talks with other parties, many of which are unwilling to hand over the prime minister’s office, traditionally the key position in any governing coalition.
Nationalist party’s rise reshapes negotiations
The possible participation of a nationalist party in government, especially with George Simion as prime minister, would mark a major shift in Romanian politics and could alter the balance of power both domestically and externally.
Political analysts say Simion’s demand is difficult for other parties to accept. At the same time, they note that AUR’s growing popularity and political pressure may increasingly influence the direction of coalition negotiations.
For now, discussions remain uncertain as parties continue maneuvering over the shape of Romania’s next government.
