Why Is Ilie Bolojan Flying to Chișinău?

Moldova News

Romanian Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan is expected to visit Chișinău, bringing with him the usual traffic disruptions. Authorities have announced restrictions in central Chișinău and around the airport from noon on June 13 until 9:00 p.m. on June 14.

The purpose of the visit remains unclear, and the timing has raised questions among observers. Bolojan’s political position is currently uncertain. Following a vote of no confidence earlier this year, he has remained in office in a caretaker capacity while a new government is being formed.

Meanwhile, a new prime minister-designate, Eugen Tomac, was appointed on June 4 and is expected to seek parliamentary approval for his cabinet. This creates the unusual possibility that Bolojan could arrive in Chișinău as acting prime minister and return to Romania as a private citizen if the transition is completed during that period.

Given the temporary nature of his mandate, some critics question the practical value of high-level bilateral meetings at this stage. They argue that major political decisions are unlikely to be negotiated with a leader whose time in office may be measured in days.

This has fueled speculation about the real purpose of the trip. Is it a farewell visit to political allies within Moldova’s ruling PAS party? A routine diplomatic engagement? Or discussions that have not been publicly disclosed?

For now, officials have provided few details, leaving room for questions and political interpretation. Whether the visit produces any concrete outcomes remains to be seen.
