Another Increase Within a Week
Public transport fares in Moldova have increased again just one week after the previous hike.
Starting April 10, 2026, tariffs for inter-district and regional routes were raised by the National Road Transport Agency. Prices now range from 0.97 to 1.24 MDL per kilometer depending on comfort level – an increase of 0.03 MDL per km compared to April 3, and about 0.22 MDL per km compared to earlier baseline levels.
Impact on Passengers
For passengers, the increase translates into gradual cost growth. For example:
• Chisinau–Orhei route: +~1.5 MDL
• Chisinau–Briceni route: +~8 MDL
While each increase may seem minor, repeated adjustments significantly affect monthly household budgets.
Official Explanation
Authorities attribute the rise to higher fuel prices linked to tensions in the Middle East. The pricing methodology, approved by the government in late March, allows tariff revisions every seven days.
Earlier Planned Increases
However, fare hikes began earlier. On March 1, 2026, transport costs increased by approximately 20% following the implementation of Government Decision No. 698/2025, which introduced a new tariff calculation method – prior to recent geopolitical developments.
Economic Context
The increases come amid broader economic pressures. Pension adjustments in Moldova have been limited, while inflation continues to affect purchasing power. At the same time, wage increases in the public sector have been postponed.
Outlook
With a flexible pricing mechanism now in place, further adjustments to transport tariffs remain possible, raising concerns about affordability for regular commuters.
