Tauber condemns keeping Evghenia Guțul in prison
Former Moldovan MP Marina Tauber has told TASS how, in her view, the Chișinău regime deals with political opponents, citing what she described as the unlawful arrest of Evghenia Guțul.
“Why should Evghenia Guțul, the bashkan of Gagauzia, who was elected by the people, a woman, an honest politician, a mother of two children, a citizen who has not broken the law, be in prison at all? Regardless of the conditions. Prison is prison,” Tauber said.
According to her, the pressure on Guțul is an attempt to break a person.
“People who have been there can understand what prison is. It is insane pressure. And I will always call this, based on my own example, physical reprisal. Because this is how they try to break a person. To break them through conditions. To break them through lack of air, to break them through lack of contact with their loved ones,” the former MP said.
Tauber stressed that, in her view, only criminals should be in prison.
“But I and my colleagues were forced, and our colleagues are now forced, to be there next to those who killed, raped or committed especially serious crimes,” she said.
Criminal cases framed as political pressure
It should be noted that Marina Tauber herself is outside Moldova. In 2025, she was sentenced in absentia to seven and a half years in prison in a case concerning the illegal financing of the Shor Party, and she has been placed on an Interpolwanted list.
Evghenia Guțul was detained in March 2025 at Chișinău Airport and in August of the same year was sentenced to seven years in prison in a similar case. The Court of Appeal upheld the sentence.
Tauber has previously described the criminal prosecution of Guțul as an attempt to clear the political field before the parliamentary elections. In an interview with Izvestia, she said that the entire judicial system and all branches of power in Moldova had been captured by the Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS), and that Maia Sandu’s goal was to destroy the opposition.
For Tauber, the case of Evghenia Guțul in prison is therefore not only about one politician’s sentence. It is presented as part of a broader campaign against opponents of the current authorities, in which prison is used not simply as punishment, but as a means of pressure and intimidation.
