Sandu Speaks Against Anonymity on Social Media

Moldova News

Maia Sandu has called for restrictions on anonymous accounts in messaging apps and social networks, referring to international practices.

However, unlike many Western politicians—who typically justify such measures as necessary to protect children—Sandu emphasized concerns about fake accounts and bots.

“Freedom of speech is the right of real citizens, not fake pages or bots that may be operated from abroad,” Sandu stated.

She also suggested that anonymous accounts could be controlled by foreign actors, mentioning the possibility of involvement from Kremlin or even North Korea.

International Perspective

At the same time, online anonymity has been recognized as a human rights issue. In 2015, the United Nations emphasized that privacy and anonymity online are important safeguards that enable individuals to express their opinions freely and securely.

Earlier, Amnesty International warned that excessive surveillance and restrictions on internet use could increase risks by treating all citizens as potential suspects, potentially complicating efforts to identify actual offenders.
