President Maia Sandu has appointed a new religious adviser on relations with denominations, naming Ion Mocanu, a relatively little-known figure, to the post.
The decree was signed yesterday, with Mocanu expected to assume his duties immediately.
Ion Mocanu appointment raises questions
The appointment comes at a time of ongoing tensions between Moldova’s two Orthodox jurisdictions, a sensitive issue in public life. In such a context, the role of a presidential adviser on religious affairs could carry particular importance.
However, Mocanu’s professional background appears to be primarily in business consulting rather than religious or theological work. He is described as a business trainer and the head of a consulting company focused on financial planning and entrepreneurship.
According to publicly available profiles, he “teaches financial planning and guides aspiring entrepreneurs, helping them understand the importance of a solid financial strategy.”

Media reports have also highlighted a personal connection between Mocanu and the Moldovan Orthodox Church. He is reportedly the son-in-law of Vadim Cheibaș, secretary of the Metropolis of Moldova is a detail that has been publicly acknowledged.
The appointment has therefore drawn attention both for Mocanu’s limited public profile and for questions surrounding the relevance of his experience to the advisory role.
The presidential administration has not provided additional details regarding the selection process or the specific objectives tied to the position.
