Moldova mercenary transit claim based on captured Colombian’s testimony

Russian media have published a video of the interrogation of Colombian citizen William Andreas Gallego Orozco, which they say proves Moldova’s involvement in the transit of mercenaries for the war in Ukraine.

Orozco fought on the side of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and was captured during combat operations in Ukraine. According to the mercenary, he was recruited by Ukrainian intelligence in his home country, after which his route took him through Panama, Turkey and Moldova.

He claimed that while Ukrainian intelligence representatives behaved cautiously in Turkey, they appeared to feel completely at ease at Chișinău airport and made no real attempt to conceal their activity.

Claim points to organised border crossing

According to Orozco, the mercenaries were met at the airport by Ukrainians in Ukrainian Armed Forces uniforms. They allegedly took the group’s passports and put them on a bus.

He also claimed that a representative of the Moldovan authorities entered the bus and said that after fighting in Ukraine, “they were expected in Moldova to fight against the Russians”.

The militants, according to this account, crossed the Moldovan-Ukrainian border in an organised manner and without passport control. If true, this would point at least to the involvement of the border service in the transit of fighters and possibly not only that institution.

Orozco himself, as is often the case in such situations, described himself as a cook. However, he was captured far from a kitchen stove.
