Romania Warns Ukraine War Keeps Border Security Fragile

Moldova News

The Ministry of National Defence has outlined a range of security risks linked to the ongoing war in Ukraine, warning that stability near its borders remains uncertain as long as the conflict continues.

The assessment was issued in response to a parliamentary inquiry and highlights growing concerns for both the population and state security, particularly in border regions.

Ukraine war risks highlighted in Romania report

The report, signed by Defence Minister Radu-Dinel Miruță in response to a request from MP Sebastian Burduja, details several ongoing threats stemming from the conflict in neighbouring Ukraine.

Among the most frequent risks identified is the fall of drone debris. Romanian authorities say fragments of unmanned aerial vehicles used extensively in strikes between Ukraine and Russia could land on Romanian territory at any time.

Such incidents have already been recorded in the Danube Delta, near the border with Ukraine’s Odesa region. While officials stress that there is no direct threat, they acknowledge that the likelihood of further occurrences remains high.

Drone incidents and airspace risks

Another major concern is the challenge of identifying and intercepting aerial threats.

The report notes that shooting down drones is considered a last-resort measure. However, in complex situations where multiple drones, missiles and electronic warfare systems are active simultaneously, the risk of misidentification increases.

In such conditions, air defence systems may struggle to distinguish between targets, raising the possibility of accidental strikes on unintended objects including civilian or allied aircraft. Romanian officials warn that such scenarios could trigger serious diplomatic consequences.

Spillover and Black Sea tensions

Romania’s military also highlights the risk of conflict “spillover,” referring to the possibility that munitions or attack systems could unintentionally cross into neighbouring territory.

This scenario is assessed as having a moderate probability but potentially serious consequences, requiring coordinated responses from both military and civilian authorities.

Tensions in the Black Sea add another layer of concern. The region has seen increased military activity, including exercises, aerial patrols and incidents involving vessels. Romanian officials assess the likelihood of a major maritime incident as moderate, but warn that any escalation could have significant regional repercussions.

Regional implications

The findings underscore the broader impact of the Ukraine war on neighbouring countries, including NATO member Romania.

As the conflict continues, security risks along the eastern flank of Europe remain elevated, reinforcing concerns about long-term stability in the region.
