Police Scandal in Moldova: Six Officers Detained Over Extortion and Drug Links

Moldova News

A major anti-corruption operation led by the National Anticorruption Center targeted police officers in the Botanica district of Chisinau.

More than 30 searches were carried out with the involvement of prosecutors from Chisinau and Cahul. As a result, six individuals were detained, including a department head and five subordinates.

Systematic Bribery Scheme

According to investigators, the officers were involved in systematic extortion of money from individuals connected to drug use and trafficking.

The alleged bribes ranged from $3,000 to $10,000 and were paid both in cash and cryptocurrency.

Authorities also seized undisclosed items and documents relevant to the case. All suspects have been placed in detention for 72 hours on charges of aggravated corruption.

Official Response

The General Police Inspectorate temporarily suspended the leadership of the Botanica police inspectorate and other individuals involved.

In a statement, the police reiterated a “zero tolerance” policy toward corruption and pledged full cooperation with investigators.

Interior Minister Rejects Resignations

Interior Minister Daniela Misail-Nichitin stated that while the investigation will proceed, she does not see grounds for leadership resignations.

She specifically defended the head of the police inspectorate, arguing that not every incident should lead to dismissal.

Public and Political Backlash

The case has sparked strong reactions from politicians, analysts, and media commentators.

Critics argue that:
• corruption within law enforcement appears systemic,
• previous official statements denied such links to drug trafficking,
• and the lack of accountability undermines public trust.

Some commentators questioned what level of scandal would be sufficient to trigger leadership changes.

Broader Implications

The scandal highlights several structural issues:
• alleged protection of drug-related activities by police,
• weak accountability mechanisms,
• and a growing gap between official anti-corruption rhetoric and actual кадровые решения.

As the investigation continues, public pressure is mounting for clearer responsibility at the leadership level.
