Alexandru Munteanu says taxi drivers offer a view of society

Moldovan Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu has explained how he learns about the situation in the country and possible ways to solve its problems.

The head of government admitted that important decisions are sometimes shaped by conversations with taxi drivers. In his view, they know “everything about everything” and can discuss both politics and the economy.

Speaking on a television programme, Munteanu shared observations he had made even before taking office. He said he often used taxis in Chișinău and enjoys speaking with drivers in different countries.

According to him, taxi drivers provide a ready-made snapshot of society. They have answers to all kinds of questions and can quickly suggest solutions.

“Taxi drivers know everything about everything. They can talk about politics and the economy. They solve every issue very quickly: they have a programme. They have solutions for everything, for everything,” Munteanu said.

The prime minister also noted that he had frequently travelled between Chișinău and Kyiv, crossing Transnistria more than a thousand times.

Critics may now wonder why the country needs a National Centre for Crisis Management and a long list of advisers if catching a taxi is enough. Perhaps, in this case, that is what real closeness to the people looks like.
