Planned Increase in Personnel
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Moldova, led by Mihai Popsoi, has announced plans to expand its staff by 35 positions, bringing the total number of employees to 196.
Budget Impact
The expansion is expected to cost approximately €700,000 annually (converted from 13.9 million Moldovan lei), raising questions about public spending and administrative efficiency.
New Departments Created
To accommodate the additional staff, new units will be established, including:
• a department focused on relations with Romania
• a newly introduced “cyber diplomacy” unit
Officials state that these changes are necessary to support Moldova’s EU integration efforts.
Debate Over Government Expansion
The increase comes as the ministry reaches its largest size in recent years. Authorities argue that expanding administrative capacity is essential for handling the growing complexity of foreign policy and European integration processes.
Critics, however, question whether such expansion is justified given Moldova’s limited resources and broader economic challenges.
