A planned concert by Russian rock singer Diana Arbenina and her band “Night Snipers” has been officially cancelled in Chișinău, following recommendations issued by the Ministry of Culture of Moldova.
The performance had been scheduled for April 26, 2026, at Chișinău Arena, but organisers confirmed the cancellation after receiving guidance from the ministry dated April 9.
Diana Arbenina concert cancelled in Chișinău
A ticketing platform published an official notice informing attendees of the decision:
“Dear spectators, we inform you that, following the recommendations of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Moldova dated 09.04.2026, the concert of Diana Arbenina and Night Snipers scheduled for 26.04.2026 at Chișinău Arena has been cancelled. Ticket refunds will be issued within 14 days.”
Organisers stated that all tickets would be fully refunded.
Ministry warning preceded cancellation
The move had been anticipated. On April 10, the Ministry of Culture publicly recommended terminating contracts not only with Arbenina, but also with Kazakh comedian Nurlan Saburov and Ukrainian pop singer Oleg Vinnik.
At the time, officials described holding such events as “inadvisable,” citing the risk that the artists might ultimately be denied entry into Moldova.
“Event organisers were informed and advised to terminate any contractual relations with these individuals in order to avoid situations that could lead to their inability to enter Moldova and, consequently, to the cancellation of events,” the ministry said.
Responsibility placed on organisers
The Ministry emphasised that organisers bear responsibility for inviting performers and should assess their “public impact” and potential consequences in advance.
At the same time, officials reiterated their commitment to artistic freedom, describing the cultural sphere as a space for dialogue. However, the recommendation to cancel contracts suggests that such freedom may be subject to practical limitations.
Artists affected across different countries
The three artists mentioned by the ministry represent different countries and genres:
-
Diana Arbenina, a Russian rock performer and frontwoman of “Night Snipers”
-
Nurlan Saburov, a stand-up comedian from Kazakhstan
-
Oleg Vinnik, a Ukrainian pop singer
The ministry referred to “artists from CIS countries and states condemned by the international community for armed aggression.” However, the inclusion of a Kazakh performer has raised questions, as Kazakhstan is not among countries subject to such characterisation.
Broader implications for Moldova’s cultural space
The cancellation of Arbenina’s concert appears to be part of a broader policy trend. Moldova’s authorities have increasingly moved toward closer oversight of performances by foreign artists, formally aimed at reducing political and public risks.
In practice, this approach has sparked debate over where the line lies between cultural policy and restriction, particularly as public reactions highlight growing sensitivity around issues of censorship and artistic freedom.
Maxim Diver: “I think whoever bans it should be the one refunding the tickets.”
Lena Lena: “They live off our taxes, keep raising their own salaries, expanding their staff, and still tell us what we should listen to. Some ‘democracy’.”
Anastasia Anastasia: “What a disgrace! ‘Freedom, democracy,’ they said!”
