Museum in Chițcani set for closure

The Ministry of Culture has removed the museum dedicated to the Iași–Chișinău operation from the state register. The institution, located in the village of Chițcani in the Rîșcani District, is reportedly being prepared for closure.

The site is historically linked to 1944, when the headquarters of the Second Ukrainian Front, commanded by Rodion Malinovsky, was based there.

Historical background of the museum

The museum was opened in 1977 following a request from local residents. During the Soviet period, the village itself was named after Rodion Malinovsky.

Over the years, the museum became a local landmark and a point of interest for visitors, focusing on the Iași–Chișinău operation and World War II history. It was expected to mark its 50th anniversary next year.

Reactions and public response

The decision has prompted reactions from public figures and organizations. Alexei Petrovich, head of the national coordinating committee “Victory”, criticized the move and said efforts would be made to preserve the site.

“From those who close cultural centers and consider removing monuments, nothing else is expected. But we will do everything possible to preserve this unique military-historical site,” he said.

The future of the museum and any potential alternative arrangements have not yet been officially clarified.
