Proposal to introduce new national holidays
Dragoș Galbur, a political figure associated with unionist movements, has proposed making March 27 and December 1 official public holidays in Moldova.
In a statement, he said he had submitted a request to Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu, calling on lawmakers to designate these dates as non-working national holidays.
“I have submitted a request to Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu in the hope that the parliamentary majority will consider my proposal for March 27 and December 1 to become official non-working national holidays in the Republic of Moldova,” he said.
Ongoing debate over historical commemorations
The proposal has added to ongoing public discussions about national identity and the role of historical commemorations in Moldova.
Different groups in society emphasize different historical dates, including Victory Day on May 9 and events related to Romania’s history. These differing perspectives reflect broader debates about identity, history and political orientation.
Broader context
In recent years, discussions around history education, public holidays and memorial policies have become increasingly prominent in Moldova.
Analysts note that such debates often highlight divisions within society regarding historical interpretation and national identity, rather than leading to a unified approach to commemorative practices.
