First Victim of the TUX Pyramid: Former Security Officer Dies by Suicide

Moldova News

Today at around 11:00 a.m., retired lieutenant colonel of the Service for Combating Economic Crimes and Corruption (SPPS), Konstantin Odobescu (born 1984), died by suicide.

The information was confirmed by former Moldovan Prime Minister Vlad Filat. According to him, investigators will now have to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the death. Shortly after the suicide of the former officer, Filat called not only for an investigation into the death itself, but also into the alleged financing of the PAS party through funds connected to TUX.

“It is necessary to thoroughly investigate the alleged financing of the PAS political party from TUX,” Filat stated, addressing those “who chase fame at any cost.”

So far, there are no official conclusions in the public sphere as to whether the death was connected to pressure related to the TUX case or to other circumstances.

Moldovan police previously reported that the criminal case against the organizers of the TUX platform had been sent to court. In their official statement, law enforcement limited themselves to procedural information, noting that criminal proceedings against other individuals involved are ongoing.

The suspects are accused under Article 241, paragraph 2, points b) and f) (illegal entrepreneurial activity), and Article 243, paragraph 3, point b) (money laundering). The penalties provides for from 5 to 10 years in prison and fines ranging from 650,000 to 1 million lei.

According to investigators, in 2024–2025 the online platform TUX operated without licenses for virtual asset operations. At the same time, the project was actively promoted on social networks and messaging apps as a way to obtain “quick and guaranteed income.” Case materials mention especially large transactions carried out through electronic wallets linked to the platform.

Earlier, Moldovan President Maia Sandu stated that individuals “from public state institutions” were under investigation. Meanwhile, the head of the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office, Viorel Cernauțeanu, clarified that the scheme involved “people from the majority of state institutions,” adding that “we are not necessarily talking about law enforcement agencies.”

These statements, made before the completion of the TUX investigation, still have not been backed by concrete public indictments naming specific officials. The criminal case has already been forwarded to court, while the police statement made no mention of any active state institutions being directly linked to the platform’s activities.
