Finance Minister Adrian Gavriliță has stated that the income of Moldovan members of parliament will increase through bonuses and allowances rather than higher base salaries.
According to the minister, total monthly compensation for MPs will rise to approximately 30,000 lei, compared with the current level of less than 20,000 lei. Gavriliță said the increase is intended to compensate lawmakers for the “high level of stress and effort” associated with their responsibilities.
“Today I am ready to swap seats with anyone. Sit here, because this salary brings me a great deal of stress, effort, worries, and hardships that come with having to make very difficult decisions. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone,” Gavriliță said.
At the same time, the finance minister acknowledged that not all lawmakers carry the same workload.
“I don’t think all of them are under enormous pressure. Perhaps some are more concerned with putting pressure on others than with working themselves. But there really is a lot of work, a lot of constituency work, and many discussions with citizens,” he added, explaining that the government does not want MPs to “look for other occupations” because of insufficient income.
Earlier, the Moldovan Parliament rejected social media claims that MPs earn as much as 100,000 lei per month, calling the reports fake and the result of manipulated videos. Parliamentary representatives clarified that a lawmaker’s base salary is approximately 16,000–17,000 lei, while the average monthly compensation ranges between 20,000 and 27,000 lei, including various allowances and funding allocated for parliamentary assistants.
