Gagauzia bashkan election draws first declared candidate
Former Moldovan MP Fedor Gagauz has announced his intention to run for bashkan of Gagauzia. He became the first politician to declare his candidacy after People’s Assembly of Gagauzia Speaker Valentin Gaidarji said he was prepared to declare the post vacant.
“Today is not the time to stand aside. After consulting residents of the region, I have decided to run for bashkan of Gagauzia. This is a considered decision and a major responsibility that I am ready to assume,” Gagauz claimed. “I am taking it on not for the sake of political struggle, but because I am convinced that, more than ever, Gagauzia today needs calm, unity and progress.”
The former MP also called for an end to the political confrontation between Chișinău and Comrat. He argued that the region’s political isolation had harmed not only Gagauzia, but Moldova as a whole.
Although Fedor Gagauz is formally unaffiliated with any political party, he has close links to the Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova (PSRM). He entered parliament on the Socialists’ list in 2014 and stood for the Bloc of Communists and Socialists in 2021.
The Gagauzia bashkan election has not yet been formally announced. However, should Valentin Gaidarji’s proposal be approved, the vote could take place in November alongside elections for a new composition of the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia.
