Expensive Easter: Celebrating the Holiday Is Getting Costlier

Moldova News

Sharp rise in Easter pastry prices

Easter baking in Moldova has become significantly more expensive this year, with prices jumping by as much as 30%, according to Logos Press.

Traditional Easter cakes have seen a steep increase, largely driven by rising costs—particularly fuel, logistics, flour, eggs, butter, and other key ingredients.

Mass-market vs. premium products

Prices for mass-market baked goods have increased more moderately, by around 5–10%. However, when compared to the annual pension increase of just 6.8%, even this rise feels substantial for many consumers.

Meanwhile, premium or “designer” Easter cakes have surged by 25–30%, reflecting both higher production costs and demand for specialty products.

Current price ranges

As a result, standard Easter pastries for the average consumer now cost between 28 and 60 lei, depending on size. More elaborate or “trendy” versions range from 80 to 150 lei.

Market structure and key players

The Association of Bread Producers and Millers of Moldova notes that while the sector includes around 300 enterprises, pricing trends are largely set by major producers. Among the key market players are companies such as Franzeluta, Paninella, Colibri, Bon Appetit, and 7 Spice, along with regional producers like the Bălți bakery.

Franzeluta alone controls around 30% of the market, producing approximately 60 tons of baked goods daily – about 22,000 tons annually. Large enterprises collectively account for roughly one-third of the market, while small businesses make up the remaining two-thirds.

Ripple effect across the industry

When major producers raise prices, smaller bakeries and private producers tend to follow suit, amplifying the overall increase across the market. Producers are expected to finalize and assess the full results of Easter sales after Radonitsa, which traditionally marks the end of the holiday sales period.
