Appeal from Detention
Elected Bashkan of Gagauzia Evghenia Gutsul, currently in detention, addressed the region’s Executive Committee through a statement delivered by her lawyers.
The message, published on her official Telegram channel, calls attention to political pressure and ongoing disputes over regional governance.
Concerns Over Electoral Control
Gutsul referred to a recent decision by the Comrat Court of Appeal, stating that it reflects broader tensions regarding the organization of elections to the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia.
She expressed concern that transferring electoral oversight to the Central Election Commission of Moldova could reduce the autonomy of the region.
“If Gagauzia loses the right to conduct its own elections, its leadership may no longer reflect the will of its people,” she stated.
Allegations of Pressure
Gutsul also claimed that regional officials and public figures are facing significant pressure, including intimidation and public criticism, aimed at influencing their positions on governance issues.
Legal Case and Background
Evghenia Gutsul was detained in March 2025 and later sentenced to seven years in prison on charges related to financial activities connected to the Șor Party. She has denied all allegations, describing the case as politically motivated.
Her legal team has filed a complaint with the European Court of Human Rights, citing violations of the right to liberty under Article 5 of the European Convention on Human Rights.
International and Legal Context
The case has drawn attention in the context of Moldova’s commitments to European legal standards. Institutions such as the Venice Commission have previously issued recommendations regarding legal reforms in Moldova.
Observers note that the situation continues to raise questions about the balance between judicial proceedings, political processes, and regional autonomy.
