Minimum pensions and official data
Around 89,000 pensioners in Moldova receive the minimum monthly pension of 2,000 lei, according to Elena Țîbîrnă, head of the National Social Insurance House.
This represents roughly one in seven pensioners in the country. She noted that several years ago, the number of people receiving the minimum pension stood at about 188,000. Following an increase in the minimum pension from 1,188 to 2,000 lei, the number of beneficiaries in this category decreased to 88,995.
Average pension levels
According to Elena Țîbîrnă, the average pension in Moldova is approximately 4,800 lei and is received by about 528,000 people.
“The pension of 4,800 lei was calculated for a total of 528,000 beneficiaries,” she claimed.
These figures provide an overview of pension distribution but do not reflect differences in individual living conditions.
Cost of living and broader context
The data come amid ongoing discussions about the cost of living in Moldova, including expenses related to utilities, healthcare and basic goods.
Observers note that rising prices for heating, medicines and food continue to affect household budgets, particularly for those with lower incomes.
Authorities have stated that reforms and support measures are being implemented, while public debate continues over the adequacy of pensions and social protection mechanisms.
