Diesel prices in Moldova rise above 30 lei per litre

Fuel prices continue to increase

Diesel prices in Moldova have reached 30.74 lei per litre, rising by 56 bani in a single day. Petrol prices have also increased, reaching 29.29 lei per litre.

The 30-lei threshold, often seen as a key benchmark, has now been exceeded. At the beginning of March, on March 3, diesel cost 20.87 lei per litre. At the time, government officials said prices would not surpass 30 lei per litre. Within less than a month, prices have risen by nearly 50%.

The National Agency for Energy Regulation (ANRE), which publishes updated price caps daily, has not provided detailed comment, referring instead to global market trends and the situation in the Middle East.

Questions over regulatory approach

Recent developments have prompted discussion about how different economic measures are being applied. ANRE previously cited the state of emergency as a reason to postpone a proposed reduction in electricity tariffs, including a potential decrease of 3–5 bani per kWh.

At the same time, fuel prices have continued to rise, with increases of around 50–60 bani per day in recent periods.

The government has also recently pointed to the state of emergency and broader economic conditions when explaining the postponement of public sector wage increases. Pension adjustments, including a 51-lei increase in the minimum pension, have been presented as part of social support measures.

Broader economic implications

Rising fuel prices are expected to have wider economic effects, potentially contributing to higher costs across multiple sectors, including food and construction materials.

Authorities have linked fuel price dynamics to external factors, including developments in global energy markets. At the same time, public discussion continues regarding the effectiveness of existing policies and the impact on households and businesses.
