Recean remains part of PAS team despite leaving frontline politics
PAS vice-president Dan Perciun has made a series of statements that shed light on relations between the country’s current leadership and former Prime Minister Dorin Recean after his departure from high-level politics.
His comments came against the backdrop of confirmed information about staffing disagreements between the current head of government, Vasile Tofan, and his predecessor. Speaking on a television programme, Perciun said Recean continues to maintain contact with the party and advise it on a number of issues, despite having announced his withdrawal from public life last autumn.
“Mr Recean was very active and involved, including during the election period and in party life. We felt, and to a significant extent continue to feel, that he is part of the team,” Perciun said.
He also noted that although communication is not regular, Recean remains among the people with whom PAS consults because of their experience.
“The fact that these people have completed their mandate at the head of government does not mean they have stopped being part of the team,” the PAS vice-president added.
Tofan denies being controlled from the shadows
Perciun’s remarks can be interpreted as confirmation of the former prime minister’s informal influence. That is especially significant given reports in several media outlets that the new prime minister, Vasile Tofan, has had disagreements with Dorin Recean over appointments in the security structures.
According to those reports, Recean opposes the dismissal of several heads of security bodies who were appointed or promoted during his mandate.
Tofan himself confirmed that he had been in close contact with his predecessor, saying they had met three times over the past month. However, he was quick to reject rumours that Recean was “pulling the strings” from the shadows and insisted on his own independence.
“I am not the kind of person who can be pulled by all sorts of strings, I want to assure you of that. Nobody calls me, nobody gives me instructions,” Tofan said.
Dorin Recean served as prime minister from February 2023. In October 2025, after the parliamentary elections, he unexpectedly announced that he would leave office and end his political career, saying he intended to return to business.
