From June 14 to June 21, Moldova’s capital will host the annual Moldova Pride festival. The event will culminate in a pride parade scheduled for June 21.
Organizers have openly stated their intention to seek legal recognition of same-sex marriages in Moldova. This year’s festival is being held under the slogan: “Love Creates, the Law Protects.”
LGBT activist Angelica Frolov, in a social media post, emphasized that the ruling PAS party has no connection to the festival. According to her, the event is being organized by a non-governmental organization, the Genderdoc-M Information Center.
“This festival is not organized by PAS, and PAS has nothing to do with it. It never has. The festival is organized by an NGO called the Genderdoc-M Information Center. And no, not a single leu from Moldovan taxpayers is spent on this festival,” Frolov wrote.
At the same time, in the same post, the activist used the hashtags #PAS and #MaiaSandu, creating a contrast between the ruling party’s public distancing from the event and references to the president and members of the governing party.
Meanwhile, Moldova’s National Bureau of Statistics of Moldova continues to publish demographic data indicating that the country is losing population. According to the reports, rural communities continue to shrink, young people are leaving the country in significant numbers, and the birth rate remains insufficient to offset the natural population decline.
