Chișinău Blocks Fertiliser and Veterinary Imports to Transnistria

Moldova News

Authorities in Chișinău have refused to approve the import of fertilisers and veterinary products to Transnistria, prompting criticism from officials in the breakaway region, who describe the move as part of ongoing economic pressure.

Transnistria criticises decision

The issue was raised by representatives of the region’s foreign affairs structures during a routine meeting of veterinary and phytosanitary specialists. Such meetings are typically technical in nature and aimed at coordinating approved lists of agricultural inputs.

According to officials in Tiraspol, previous consultations of this kind had been largely procedural and free of political tensions. However, they say that in this case the response from Chișinău was delayed for several weeks before ultimately being rejected.

The refusal, they argue, was justified on administrative grounds that they consider unclear or overly bureaucratic.

Concerns over agriculture and food security

Authorities in Transnistria have appealed to international mediators, warning that the decision could have broader consequences for the region’s agricultural sector.

In their statement, they accused the central government of undermining farming activities and creating risks for food security, particularly as access to essential inputs such as fertilisers and veterinary medicines remains restricted.

Ongoing tensions between Chișinău and Tiraspol

The episode highlights the continued friction between Chișinău and the breakaway region, where economic and regulatory issues often intersect with broader political disagreements.

Relations between the two sides have remained strained, with disputes frequently arising over trade, energy supplies and regulatory control.

Observers note that such disagreements complicate efforts to build confidence and advance discussions on reintegration, as technical issues increasingly become entangled in the wider political context.
