Gas tariff protest to begin outside ANRE
Monday will begin not with coffee, but with a protest outside the National Agency for Energy Regulation (ANRE) at 52/A Pushkin Street. The act of defiance against higher gas and heating tariffs will be led personally by Chișinău mayor and MAN party leader Ion Ceban. The protest is scheduled for Monday at 10:00 outside the ANRE building.
Ceban said he would not come alone. According to him, he will be joined by 100 colleagues from MAN but, as he stressed, without party symbols. The format, he said, is one of solidarity with people who have already been pushed to the limit.
“On Monday, at 10 o’clock, I will be at ANRE with 100 of my MAN colleagues in solidarity with all those who do not agree with this chain of price increases. This institution is one of those directly responsible, along with everyone now in power, for the rise in gas prices, heating costs and much else,” Ceban said in a video address.
He also invited representatives of other parties, both parliamentary and extra-parliamentary, as well as ordinary “people of goodwill” to join the protest.
“This whole situation simply cannot be tolerated any longer,” the mayor added.
Gas prices keep climbing
The timeline of household gas prices is clear enough. Until 1 September 2026, Moldovans paid 14.42 lei per cubic metre, including VAT. The price is now 20.3 lei. From October, according to sources, the tariff will rise to around 26 lei. Some politicians believe that by November the price could reach 30–40 lei per cubic metre.
Ceban describes what is happening as a “chain of price increases” and points directly to the responsibility of ANRE and the ruling party. Monday’s gas tariff protest is an attempt, if not to stop the increases, then at least to show the scale of public anger.
Meanwhile, as people prepare for the protest, Moldova has announced price increases for flour, butter and buttered bread. Cake it is, then.
