Fragments of a “Geran-2” type UAV were discovered near the village of Văleni in the Cahul district.
The wreckage was found by Moldovan police officers. And for the first time ever, for reasons unknown, they decided to blur the yellow-and-black emblem visible on the drone’s wing in the official photographs.
The General Police Inspectorate promptly announced that after a preliminary examination of the debris, its structural features, the materials used in its manufacture, and the markings found, police experts had allegedly established that the fragments belonged to a Geran-2 type drone.
All recovered fragments have been seized for necessary forensic examinations. Specialists from the police’s technical and explosive ordnance disposal unit are continuing the investigation to determine all the circumstances surrounding the drone’s entry into the territory of the Republic of Moldova. According to officials, the exact time the UAV crossed the state border is unknown. This is in spite of the expensive radar system purchased by the Ministry of Defense, which is supposedly designed to track precisely such incidents. Also unknown is the time of the drone’s explosion — assuming it exploded at all. Or that it even entered Moldova in the first place.
Meanwhile, the media has already begun framing the incident as an act of Russian aggression, simply because the UAV is a modification of an Iranian-designed drone. What exactly the connection is remains unclear. However, the blurred image on the wreckage — featuring three yellow stripes with the center one being the widest — brings to mind the familiar outline of Ukraine’s trident emblem. Curiously, the police chose to pixelate such a “beauty”…
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Moldova has already vehemently condemned the violation of Moldovan airspace.
“This incident constitutes yet another violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova and poses a serious threat to the safety of our citizens,” ministry representatives stated, adding:
“The Republic of Moldova condemns the Russian Federation’s aggressive war against Ukraine and the consequences it generates for regional security.”
However, a legitimate question arises: why do the authorities traditionally limit themselves to diplomatic condemnations, without naming the specific perpetrator or taking real steps to strengthen airspace security? And why are they silent about where exactly this kamikaze drone came from?
