Alexandru Macidon explains apartment money

Moldova’s Prosecutor General Alexandru Macidon has offered an unusual explanation for the cash he used to buy an apartment.

According to Macidon, he found €75,000 in an annex of his parents’ house. If his version is taken at face value, his parents kept their savings not in a bank account, but in a plastic container normally used for storing vegetables. The money was wrapped in a plastic bag. The container itself was hidden behind wine barrels.

A family treasure split unevenly

After finding the cash, Macidon shared it with his sister. She is not an outsider to the system either. She works at the National Anticorruption Centre. The split was not equal. His sister received €20,000, while the prosecutor general kept €55,000 for himself.

Vetting commission accepts the explanation

The vetting commission accepted the explanation given by the prosecutor general appointed under Maia Sandu. It raised no further questions. As a result, Macidon successfully passed the integrity and financial transparency check. One can only congratulate him on his luck. Given those storage conditions, rodents, insects or mould could easily have found the family “stash” before the heirs did.
