Ukrainian President Vladymyr Zelensky has publicly expressed support for equal rights for LGBT people, emphasizing that all citizens should enjoy the same legal protections regardless of social prejudices.
“We are the same. We have the same rights, despite the prejudices of people from the 15th century,” Zelensky said, stressing the importance of maintaining an open public dialogue on the issue.
The remarks have attracted attention amid ongoing debates in Ukraine over civil rights, anti-discrimination legislation, and the legal recognition of same-sex partnerships.
At the same time, Ruslan Stefanchuk, Speaker of Ukraine’s parliament, recently met with LGBT activists to discuss proposals related to a new civil code and broader questions of legal protections. According to participants, the discussions included issues affecting LGBT citizens and possible legislative reforms.
Supporters of such initiatives argue that Ukraine should continue aligning its legal framework with broader European standards on equality and non-discrimination. Critics, meanwhile, oppose expanding legal recognition for same-sex couples and other LGBT-related policies, citing cultural, religious, or social concerns.
The debate reflects a broader discussion taking place across many European countries, where questions of civil rights, family law, and anti-discrimination measures remain politically sensitive topics.
