Ukrainian Prime Minister to Resign

Europe's View

Following recent political changes in Romania and Moldova, Ukraine is also preparing for a government reshuffle. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced that Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko will soon step down. Under Ukraine’s Constitution, the resignation of the prime minister automatically results in the resignation of the entire Cabinet of Ministers.

Svyrydenko later confirmed that she would be leaving office. According to media speculation, she may be appointed to a diplomatic position in Washington, similar to the reassignment of other senior Ukrainian officials in recent years.

According to Zelenskyy, the government reshuffle is part of a broader change in Ukraine’s political strategy. He said the country intends to strengthen cooperation with the United States, the European Union, and the Gulf states, devote greater attention to frontline regions, and intensify preparations for the coming winter. Zelenskyy also announced upcoming personnel changes within Ukraine’s law enforcement agencies.

No official successor has yet been nominated. Political analysts have mentioned several possible candidates, with Serhii Koretskyi, the head of Naftogaz and Ukrnafta, frequently cited among the leading contenders.

Political commentator Anatolii Sharii reacted to the reports by claiming that Koretskyi is closely connected to businessman Tymur Mindych.

“Serhii Koretskyi, who is being named as the main candidate for prime minister, is Tymur Mindych’s man. He entered the picture at the end of 2022, when someone was needed to manage Ukrnafta after it was taken from Kolomoiskyi. As soon as it became clear that NABU had begun seriously investigating Svyrydenko, they decided to remove her and replace her with someone fully controlled by the ruling circle,” Sharii commented.

At the time of publication, Ukraine’s presidential administration had not officially announced the name of the next prime minister.
