Dodon: PAS Will Leave Power Only Under External Pressure

Opposition Lacks Internal Leverage

Leader of the Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova Igor Dodon stated that the opposition cannot remove the ruling Party of Action and Solidarity from power on its own in Moldova.

According to him, PAS, holding 55 seats in parliament, is unlikely to step down due to internal protests or political pressure.

“Internal Pressure Won’t Change Anything”

Dodon emphasized that even large-scale protests, including potential hunger strikes by opposition lawmakers, would not force the government to resign.

“Internal factors will not influence a change of power. PAS will leave only under external pressure,” he said.

Two Possible Scenarios

Dodon outlined two potential paths for a change in power:
• pressure from the United States that could push some PAS lawmakers to defect and trigger early elections
• a shift in policy by the European Union, potentially reducing financial support to Chișinău

He suggested that if around 10 deputies left PAS, it could alter the balance of power in parliament.

Political Context

The statement comes amid ongoing political tensions in Moldova, where PAS maintains control over both parliament and the government.

Opposition parties have repeatedly criticized the authorities for ignoring their позиции, while attempts to challenge government policies domestically have been blocked by the parliamentary majority.
