Trump announces Israel-Lebanon truce talks
US President Donald Trump has said he held successful phone talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, presenting the outcome as another step in what he described as a series of resolved global conflicts.
The announcement came in a post on his social media platform Truth Social, where Trump declared that he had effectively brought an end to what he called his “tenth war.”
Questions over Trump Israel Lebanon truce claims
Shortly afterwards, Trump published another post suggesting a possible first meeting between Israeli and Lebanese leaders since 1983. However, the Lebanese side has already declined the proposal.
The broader context of the conflict also raises questions about the scope of the announcement. While hostilities have intensified in the region, Israel is formally engaged in conflict with the armed group Hezbollah, rather than the Lebanese state itself.
Lebanon’s armed forces, which President Aoun represents, have maintained an official position of neutrality since the escalation began in 2023.
This distinction has led some observers to question whether the described ceasefire constitutes a direct agreement between the two states, or a more limited arrangement within an already complex conflict.
