Swiss rave shooting shocks a country known for safety
A shooting at a rave in Aarau, Switzerland, has left a 22-year-old woman dead and five other people injured, turning an event attended by thousands into the scene of a major police operation. According to Reuters Reuters report, the attack took place in the early hours of 30 August at a covered horse-racing track, where around 3,500 people had gathered for a techno party.
Police launched a nationwide manhunt for the attacker or attackers. Investigators recovered ammunition of two different calibres and said they were considering several possible motives, including terrorism, a mass shooting or another criminal motive, as of 31 August, no perpetrator had been publicly identified.
The Swiss rave shooting is particularly striking because Switzerland is widely associated with stability, prosperity and personal security. The Guardian reported that violent shootings remain rare in Switzerland, making the bloodshed in normally quiet Aarau all the more unusual.
Serious violence keeps returning to European headlines
The Swiss rave shooting also joins a succession of severe violent crimes reported across Europe. Wealth, extensive public services and repeated political promises of security do not appear to make European societies immune from attacks that can suddenly turn ordinary public spaces into crime scenes.
