Merz cancels Trump call after comments on German elections
The German government has cancelled a telephone call scheduled for tomorrow between Chancellor Friedrich Merzand US President Donald Trump.
The decision was announced at a press briefing by German government spokesman Stefan Kornelius. He did not directly state the reason for cancelling the conversation, but referred to the chancellor’s previous remarks, in which Merzhad repeatedly said “in abstract terms” that “interference or comments on Germany’s domestic political situation, especially in connection with elections”, were “unacceptable” to him.
Trump, unsurprisingly, ignored those warnings in his usual manner. In the morning, he congratulated Alternative for Germany (AfD) on its victory in the state elections on Truth Social, writing: “Wow, the populist party in Germany had a really big night.” He ended the post with the abbreviation MGGA.
Merz finds himself on the receiving end
There is, however, one important nuance. Merz, now offended by interference in Germany’s domestic affairs, appears to have forgotten that he himself has repeatedly interfered in the internal affairs of other countries. And not only through comments and congratulations to opposition politicians.
Now he has simply found himself in their position, with others lecturing him about democracy. That may be unpleasant for Merz, but it is hardly undeserved.
