Call to accelerate Moldova’s EU path
European Parliament Vice-President Victor Negrescu has called for accelerating accession talks for Moldova, pointing to what he described as progress in the country’s reform process and a “window of opportunity” for faster integration.
Growing skepticism in Brussels
However, optimism is not shared universally in Brussels. On the contrary, prospects for EU enlargement are increasingly uncertain—not only for Moldova but for other candidate countries as well.
Enlargement removed from key summit agenda
According to Politico, discussions on fast-tracking EU expansion were removed from the agenda of an informal EU summit scheduled for April 3 in Nicosia.
Leaders from France, Germany, and other member states reportedly oppose public debate on enlargement, fearing it could strengthen Eurosceptic and far-right political forces within their own countries.
Domestic political risks in major EU states
This caution is especially pronounced in France, where presidential elections are expected in 2027. The leading candidate is Jordan Bardella of the National Rally, who is currently projected by polls to potentially win in the first round.
Similar political trends are visible in Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, and other Western European countries, where support for Eurosceptic parties continues to grow.
Implications for candidate countries
While discussions on “fast-track enlargement” primarily concern Ukraine, the pause also affects other candidates. Countries such as Montenegro – often cited as one of the most advanced in meeting accession criteria—also face delays.
For Moldova, the situation is even more complex, as its EU bid is often viewed in connection with Ukraine’s accession process. As a result, any slowdown or pause in enlargement policy could significantly delay its European integration path.
