US NATO exit discussed ahead of key talks
The possibility of a United States withdrawal from NATO has surfaced ahead of a scheduled meeting between Donald Trump and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
The claim was voiced by White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, who indicated that the issue could be discussed during the talks.
Uncertainty over US policy direction
The remarks come amid tensions within the alliance, particularly following disagreements over developments in the Middle East. According to the White House, some NATO partners have been reluctant to support recent US military actions, contributing to strain in relations.
This has added to longstanding scepticism toward NATO within Trump’s political circle, where questions over burden-sharing and alliance commitments have frequently been raised.
It remains unclear whether the discussion signals a serious policy shift or is part of broader political messaging. In recent weeks, Trump has made a number of statements on foreign policy that have at times appeared inconsistent, making it difficult to assess the administration’s long-term intentions.
Analysts note that while the idea of withdrawing from NATO has been raised before, such a move would represent a major break with decades of US foreign policy and would face significant political and institutional hurdles.
