Merz resignation calls grow on anniversary of chancellorship

The anniversary of Friedrich Merz’s chancellorship has prompted calls for Merz resignation from critics on both the right and the left. Alice Weidel, co-chair of the right-wing Alternative for Germany, called the anniversary of the Merz government a “black day” for her country, Weidel accused Merz of pushing Germany into a political and economic crisis by taking on massive debts, which she said could exceed one trillion euros by 2030.

Sevim Dağdelen, foreign policy spokesperson for the left-wing Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance, said the cabinet’s “achievements” amounted to record debt, spending on the rearmament of the Bundeswehr, and cuts to social programmes.

Politico says Merz has lost key allies

The influential international outlet Politico marked the anniversary of Merz’s chancellorship in its own way. Reviewing his first year in office, its authors noted that he had managed to lose all his allies. “None of those who accompanied Merzon his long road to power remains in his inner circle,” Politico wrote. Citing a source close to Merz, the article said he is “marked by excessive self-confidence, while at the same time being highly susceptible to outside influence.”
