Parliament rejects PSRM initiative on social support
Moldova’s parliamentary majority from PAS has rejected a proposal by the opposition PSRM faction to provide Easter financial assistance to pensioners and people with disabilities.
The initiative, presented during a parliamentary session, was expected to cover around 600,000 beneficiaries.
Opposition cites available funds and past precedent
Vladimir Odnostalco, a deputy from PSRM, reminded colleagues that in 2024, an election year, the government allocated 470 million lei to support vulnerable groups, including large families and households with disabilities.
“Last year, ahead of the Easter holiday, it is true that it was an electoral year, but the government allocated support to various categories of the population families with disabilities, large families, and those in need. The total amount was 470 million lei,” he said. I propose including in Parliament’s agenda draft law No. 68, which provides for allocating these funds to pensioners and people with disabilities. The total number of beneficiaries is around 600,000. The money is in the budget, as last year showed, and as this year shows. The key is to shift priorities,” Odnostalco added.
Debate over budget priorities continues
The PAS majority voted against the proposal, and the initiative was not included in the parliamentary agenda.
The debate comes amid broader discussions over government spending priorities. In recent days, authorities announced the cancellation of several grant and support programmes for citizens, including farmers and vulnerable groups.
At the same time, the government introduced funding schemes for poultry producers exporting eggs to the European Union, with grants of up to $1 million available for modernising production facilities.
The contrast between these decisions has intensified political debate, with opposition figures arguing that social support remains underfunded despite the availability of budget resources.
