Orban: “This Is All a Farce” as EU Faces Criticism Over Hungary Dispute

Tensions Over the Druzhba Pipeline

The dispute surrounding the Druzhba Pipeline continues to escalate, with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban accusing Brussels of siding with Ukraine.

According to Orban, Ukraine has effectively blocked the pipeline, declared it “non-operational,” and refused access for inspections not only to Hungarian and Slovak experts but also to representatives of the European Commission.

Criticism of Brussels

Orbán strongly criticized Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, arguing that the EU failed to defend one of its own member states.

“Who is the European Commission really supposed to serve? This is pure theater,” he said.

He emphasized that instead of supporting Hungary, Brussels appeared to align with Kyiv’s position.

Inspection Controversy

The Hungarian leader described the situation as increasingly contradictory. Efforts to send inspection teams reportedly failed because Ukrainian authorities denied access to all parties.

Even attempts involving EU representatives were unsuccessful, with Ukraine allegedly declining to host inspections altogether.

Political Implications

Orbán suggested that the situation reflects deeper political dynamics within Europe. In his view, the European Commission should prioritize the interests of EU member states like Hungary rather than support a non-member state such as Ukraine.

Ongoing Conflict

The dispute remains unresolved, highlighting broader concerns about energy security, contractual obligations, and the role of EU institutions in mediating conflicts involving member states.
