Appeal filed against court ruling
Nicanor Ciochină, former mayor of Boldurești, has appealed his seven-year prison sentence following a conviction related to a fatal road accident involving a minor.
The sentence was issued on February 27. His legal team has now filed an appeal seeking a full acquittal. Defense lawyer Dumitru Buliga maintains that his client was not responsible for the crime.
The first hearing at the Court of Appeal is scheduled for April 7.
Background of the case
The case attracted significant public attention and lasted nearly two years, with multiple delays during the judicial process.
During this period, Nicanor Ciochină was elected mayor of Boldurești, although the election results were later annulled.
He was convicted in connection with a road accident that resulted in the death of a 14-year-old. Reports indicate that the case also involved allegations related to leaving the scene, which may have affected the outcome for the victim.
Throughout the proceedings, Nicanor Ciochină denied wrongdoing and described the case as politically motivated.
Ongoing investigations
In addition to the current case, Nicanor Ciochină is reportedly involved in a separate criminal investigation concerning allegations of torture and inhuman treatment.
The outcome of this additional investigation could have further legal consequences.
