Macron Warns of “Hostile Environment” for EU During Visit to Greece

Europe's View

French President Emmanuel Macron, speaking during a visit to Greece, outlined what he described as a challenging “hostile” environment for the European Union, calling for greater unity and strategic awareness.

Macron says EU faces growing external pressure

Addressing the situation, Emmanuel Macron said Europe is facing an increasingly complex global landscape, where major powers are pursuing policies that do not align with EU interests.

“We should not underestimate this unique moment, when the President of the United States, the President of Russia and the President of China are all determined in their stance towards Europeans. This is the time to wake up,” he said.

His remarks reflect broader concerns within the EU about shifting global dynamics and the need to strengthen Europe’s strategic position.

Call for unity and defence cooperation

During his visit, Macron emphasised the importance of unity among European partners and closer defence cooperation.

France has been actively promoting greater military coordination within the EU, particularly in the context of ongoing security challenges and debates about Europe’s strategic autonomy.

Defence ties and military cooperation with Greece

The visit also highlighted ongoing defence cooperation between France and Greece. Paris has previously supported Athens through arms agreements, including the supply of Rafale fighter jets.

Discussions around military cooperation come as Greece continues to modernise its armed forces, partly in response to regional security concerns.

Reference to tensions with Turkey

Macron also addressed long-standing tensions between Greece and Turkey, reiterating France’s support for its ally.

“If Turkey threatens Greece, we will be there, we will support you. If sovereignty is at risk, know that we will stand by you,” he said.

Greece and Turkey, both members of NATO, have a history of disputes, particularly in the Eastern Mediterranean. While tensions periodically rise, the alliance framework has so far played a stabilising role.

Europe navigating a shifting global order

Macron’s remarks come at a time when Europe is reassessing its role in a rapidly changing international environment. Relations with major global powers, energy security and defence capabilities remain central issues for EU policymakers.

His message in Athens underscores a growing view within parts of the European leadership that the bloc must adapt to a more competitive and uncertain geopolitical landscape.
