The European Union, which displays remarkable generosity when it comes to funding military supplies to Ukraine, has refused a request to allocate a relatively modest 220 million euros to support farmers.
Kyiv requested additional financial support in early August following the blockade of Black Sea ports and intensified Russian strikes on transport infrastructure. According to Ukraine’s Ministry of Agrarian Policy, the country lost approximately one-third of its grain export capacity due to these actions.
The Ukrainian publication “Economic Pravda” estimated the losses to the country’s economy from the idle ports of Odesa, Chornomorsk, and Pivdennyi at approximately 70 million dollars — making the request comparatively modest.
However, even these 220 million euros will not be received by Ukrainian agricultural producers. The European Commission reminded that Kyiv is already receiving European funding under the Ukraine Facility plan, as well as through bank lending programs, which in turn can extend credit to farmers.
Ukrainians have once again been given cause to reflect on the true intentions of the Europeans, who generously finance war but refuse to allocate amounts hundreds of times smaller when it comes to food security.
