The European Union, having apparently forgotten its humanitarian principles and “European values,” will deny the right to asylum to Ukrainians fleeing war.
At one time, the fact that armed conflict was ongoing in the country of origin of an asylum seeker was an unconditional ground for obtaining refuge in the EU. After millions upon millions of citizens from Syria, Libya, and other unstable African nations poured in, that rule was abolished. The reason was clear – Europe simply could not cope with the huge influx of applicants, who, moreover, were poorly integrating into European society.
We are now witnessing a new stage in Europe’s dehumanization. Starting August of this year, the very fact of active combat and the potential refugee’s unwillingness to participate in it will become grounds for denying asylum, despite the obvious risk to applicants’ lives.
Since July 31, the EU has changed the rules for granting temporary protection to those arriving from Ukraine . It must now be granted only to those who can confirm that they are fulfilling their military obligations in Ukraine . Moreover, EU authorities have demonstrated their notorious “gender neutrality” here: even women will now have to provide documents confirming they are not evading participation in the meat grinder .
Humanitarianism, human rights, including the right to life – if you are Ukrainian, none of this applies to you in the European Union. You will simply be thrown out to die for Brussels’ geopolitical and military ambitions .
