Red Army reburial proceeds without official honour guard

Alexei Petrovich, head of the “August” search group, said the Defence Ministry had refused to provide an honour guard for the reburial ceremony of Red Army soldiers whose remains were recovered from World War II battlefields in Moldova.

The remains of 16 soldiers who fought in the Second World War are due to be reburied today at the Șerpeni Bridgeheadmemorial complex. Similar refusals have occurred before. In previous ceremonies, honour guards were formed by retired officers and members of the Russian peacekeeping contingent stationed in Transnistria.

Call for volunteers to replace official participation

This time, Alexei Petrovich appealed to compatriots entitled to wear military uniforms to take part in the ceremony and help ensure a dignified farewell for the fallen.

He also criticised what he described as the authorities’ current approach to historical memory, arguing that official efforts increasingly focus on commemorating soldiers of the Romanian army, while those who fought against Nazi forces risk being overlooked.
