Salary reduction presented as response to social pressures
The head of the National Agency for Energy Regulation (ANRE), Alexei Taran, has announced that the agency’s leadership will reduce their salaries by 25%.
According to Taran, the decision was driven by “social reasons and the current economic situation”, as authorities seek to respond to growing public pressure amid rising living costs.
Limited financial impact raises questions
Based on previous disclosures, Taran’s official monthly salary last year stood at around 125,000 lei. Following the reduction, his pay would decrease to approximately 100,000 lei.
While the move has been framed as a gesture of solidarity, its practical impact on public finances is expected to be limited.
Broader concerns over economic hardship remain
The announcement comes against a backdrop of economic strain affecting households and businesses, including high utility costs and rising fuel prices.
Critics argue that broader policy measures such as adjustments to taxation or support for key sectors could have a more substantial effect on easing the burden on citizens than symbolic steps by officials.
