Sergey Lazo bust removal confirmed by PAS mayor
The bust of Sergey Lazo is to be dismantled in Sîngerei. The city’s mayor, Arcadie Covaliov, who represents the Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS), has confirmed the removal of the monument to the Soviet hero. One of his main arguments was that no flowers are placed at the monument.
“A serious argument, one must agree. If the absence of bouquets is now becoming the criterion for whether a monument is needed, then municipalities should urgently carry out a flower inventory of all monuments in the country,” the official said.
Alexei Petrovich, head of the Victory Coordination Committee, called the decision a dangerous precedent. In his view, the dismantling of the Lazo monument could be followed by the destruction of other Soviet monuments in towns and villages across the republic.
The planned removal of the Sergey Lazo bust has therefore raised broader concerns over the fate of Soviet-era memorials in Moldova, where decisions on monuments are increasingly becoming part of the wider dispute over historical memory.
