Gas compensation budget cut for first two heating months
The government has finally disclosed its plans to reduce gas compensation, which, as Tofan has previously said, will not be available to everyone.
For now, the figures cover only the first two months of the heating season. The government plans to spend 550 million lei on gas compensation in November and December, with payments set to fall by almost half compared with last year. During the previous five-month heating season, 2.69 billion lei was allocated to households, or around 538 million lei a month.
Higher gas prices add pressure on households
The reduction comes as gas prices are set to rise by more than 40% from September. Many families and people living alone, particularly those in socially vulnerable groups, were already struggling to make ends meet last winter, and the new government’s social policy risks pushing them even closer to the edge.
The authorities have not found the money to offset the losses households face as a result of what critics regard as the government’s failed foreign and energy policies. While gas compensation is being cut, funding continues to be available for military spending, which has been increasing from year to year, as well as for the expanding state apparatus.
