Shoigu Blames Moldova, Ukraine and EU for Transnistria Blockade

Russian Security Council Secretary Sergey Shoigu has issued a series of sharp statements on the situation in the breakaway region of Transnistria, describing current conditions there as severe.

According to Shoigu, key industrial enterprises in the region are either operating intermittently or have stopped altogether. He also pointed to what he described as an artificially created shortage of energy resources, saying the economic pressure has led to a decline in living standards.

Transnistria blockade accusations target multiple actors

Addressing the issue of the blockade, Shoigu said responsibility does not lie solely with Chișinău.

“It would be wrong to say that only Chișinău is carrying out the blockade. The Kyiv authorities are also involved, and indirectly, countries of the European Union,” he said.

Reaction to Moldova decision on Russian officers

Shoigu’s remarks came in response to a decision by Moldova’s migration authorities to declare the leadership of the Operational Group of Russian Forces (OGRF) in Transnistria persona non grata.

He said the move signals a намерение by the Moldovan government to escalate tensions. At the same time, he expressed hope that the situation would not deteriorate further.

However, Shoigu warned that any attempt to resolve the conflict by force, or to push Russian troops out of the region and replace them with a Western contingent, could have serious consequences for both Moldova and the wider region.

Reunification prospects questioned

Commenting on the prospects for reintegration, Shoigu said that such a process would require political will and sustained effort.

In his view, current policies pursued by Moldova’s leadership are not conducive to creating the conditions necessary for a settlement.

The statements underscore the ongoing tensions surrounding Transnistria, where geopolitical interests and security concerns continue to shape the dynamics between regional actors.
