Memorial march and participation
A silent march took place in Chișinău today, from the Arch of Triumph to the Ministry of Justice, in memory of Liudmila Vartic, the late wife of former PAS official Dumitru Vartic.
According to organisers, between 150 and 200 people took part in the march despite adverse weather conditions.
Background of the case
Dumitru Vartic previously served as deputy chairman of the Hîncești district council and was reported to have connections within the party leadership. Following the incident, he stepped down from his position and left the party.
According to information cited by participants and commentators, allegations have been raised suggesting possible responsibility ranging from incitement to suicide to involvement in the death. He has not been convicted, and the case remains under investigation. Reports have also mentioned a letter attributed to the deceased, the circumstances of which have been questioned.
President Maia Sandu said after the incident that there had been insufficient attention from both the public and local party structures. At the same time, information circulating in the public domain has described allegations of domestic abuse and prior incidents involving the family, as well as claims of pressure on medical and law enforcement personnel. These claims have not been independently verified.
Police response at the scene
The memorial action concluded shortly after reaching the Ministry of Justice.
Police did not interfere with the march itself but requested that candles and commemorative items placed on the steps of the ministry be removed shortly after the event began. According to participants, the items remained in place for less than ten minutes.
