On October 14, the feast day of Chisinau, the company Informbusiness will hand over to the Moldovan Railways (Calea Ferată din Moldova) the first tram manufactured in Moldova.
The tram will be autonomous — it will charge at night and be used during the day.
However, there is little reason to celebrate the return of a means of transport that has been almost forgotten on the capital’s streets for 65 years. The tram will not take to the streets. There are still no plans to build tram tracks in Chisinau.
The tram will operate on the route Chisinau Railway Station – Airport (Revaca station) and back. Instead of dedicated tram tracks, which would still have to be built, the existing railway will be used.
A modest little tram running along a half-dead railway instead of suburban electric trains — that is what we will get. And we are sure that the pro-government propaganda will consider this yet another reason for pride.
